TEMPSFORD MILL
Location:
Blunham, Bedfordshire
client:
Private
project value:
£1 million
Tempsford Mill is a striking historic waterside property set within beautifully landscaped grounds on the banks of the River Ivel. With the site having a history stretching back to the Domesday Book, and the existing mill evolving from its former industrial use into an exceptional family home, the project required a sensitive approach that respected its heritage while enhancing the way it is lived in today.
Working closely with our client, we designed a contemporary oak-framed extension to create a bright, open-plan kitchen and dining space overlooking the mill pond and surrounding gardens. A new glazed link corridor seamlessly connects the original building with the extension, while carefully considered detailing, natural materials and exposed oak framing ensure the new additions complement the character and craftsmanship of the existing property.
The proposals also included internal alterations to improve the flow and functionality of the existing accommodation, creating a home that better suits modern family living. The result is a carefully balanced design that combines contemporary architecture with traditional materials, celebrating the unique setting and heritage of one of Bedfordshire's most remarkable homes.
